The ouroboros — the snake eating its own tail — is a complete philosophy in one circle.

The ouroboros, a serpent swallowing its own tail, is one of the oldest symbols in human history. It stands for eternity, the cycle of life and death, self-sufficiency and renewal — the idea that every ending feeds a beginning. As a tattoo it is self-contained, elegant, and wears its meaning visibly.

Design cues

• — A clean circle — fine line, geometric or dotwork all work
• — The head drawn meeting the tail at a deliberate point (often the "join" holds meaning)
• — Wrapped around a moon or other symbol to extend the meaning
• — Wrist, ankle or chest — small, continuous placements

Where this meaning comes from

The ouroboros appears in ancient Egyptian and Greek sources, in alchemical texts where it symbolized the unity of all things, and in Norse mythology as Jörmungandr, the world-serpent encircling the earth. It is genuinely ancient and genuinely cross-cultural — but each tradition used it in its own way.
